Job Title: Dental Officer

Salary : £45,000 - £58,291 p/a

Hours : 37.5 hours (full time)

We are seeking dentists who genuinely want to make a difference in their community.

The post holder will:

  • Provide unscheduled dental care for patients in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly unable to access a General Dental Practitioner, and for visitors to the county requiring emergency care
  • Support with routine dental care of children and adults unable to access a General Dental Practitioner

  • Be actively involved in the Smile Together Dental CIC teams
  • Be responsible for safe working and practice on a day-to-day basis in sites of clinical activity
  • Be responsible for ensuring compliance with appropriate health, safety and security procedures within the work area, and report accidents, incidents and near misses using the Smile Together incident reporting procedure
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties as requested by the Clinical Director and Smile Together Management Team
Key accountabilities:
  • Treating target number of patients
  • Working in a number of clinics within East, Mid and/or West Cornwall
  • Maintaining and developing your clinical competency and continuing professional/personal development according to agreed training needs via our Smile Together Training Academy
  • Consider becoming a shareholder and having a voice in our business to help drive forward as an employee-owned Community Interest Company
  • Accommodating on-going organisational change demonstrating flexibility and adaptability
This post requires Occupational Health clearances, DBS clearance and two satisfactory references prior to start date, with all interview and appointment expenses covered including travel and DBS check.

Working conditions:

  • It is expected that post holders will be familiar with NHS dental services regulations
  • It is expected that post holders will be willing to receive appropriate on-going training and professional/personal development
  • The work is primarily clinic based and will include use of computer and telephony equipment
  • The work may include occasional light lifting duties such as stationery boxes, files, dental consumables or other deliveries
  • Patients and/or their carers and companions may on occasions be aggressive and abusive and this places emotional demands of which the post holder should be aware
  • There will be occasions when travel to work in other locations will be required, with paid business mileage

Our environment:

  • Cornwall has a largely rural population of over 530,000 - about a half of these people are unable to access a General Dental Practitioner
  • There are about 200 General Dental Practitioners in the county
  • There are two Consultant Oral Surgeons and one Consultant Orthodontist at Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro - oral surgery and orthodontics are also provided at Plymouth and Barnstaple
  • Smile Together operates as an employee-owned community interest company from 13 Dental Clinics in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly employing around 30 full and part-time dentists
  • Our almost 100-strong Dental Service team comprises dentists, dental therapists, dental nurses, dental lab technicians and professional support colleagues
