We have an exciting opportunity for an Orthodontist in the West Country Dental Care team of Smile Together Dental CIC to support our continuing business growth and development. Whether you are a Specialist or have a special interest in orthodontics – we would like to hear from you.

Reporting to the Clinical Director, this position will suit someone who is able to cope with the demands of the public for orthodontic services and the changes that occur as our company evolves. Responsibilities will include working with the clinic nurse on a day-to-day basis, orthodontic treatment of referred patients thought suitable to receive treatment in primary care, and onward referral of appropriate patients to hospital services.

Job Title: Orthodontist

Salary: Competitive

Responsible and accountable to: Clinical Director

Location: Newquay / Bodmin

Role summary:

To work within Smile Together and its protocols in providing an orthodontic service to the population of North and Central Cornwall. The principal duties will include the following:

  • Orthodontic examination of patients referred by General Dental Practitioners from the locality served by the post-holder.
  • Orthodontic treatment of referred patients thought suitable to receive treatment in primary care.
  • Onward referral of appropriate patients to hospital services or to other providers of orthodontic services.
  • Active participation in the company, attending meetings, peer review sessions, audit activities and MCN.
  • Responsible for safe working and practice on a day-to-day basis in sites of clinical activity, ensuring compliance with clinical governance, legislation and policy.
  • Any other reasonable duties as requested by the Clinical Director.

The post holder will:

  • Be willing to receive ongoing training to enhance performance and professional development.
  • The work is primarily clinic based and will include use of computer and telephony equipment.
  • The work may include occasional light lifting duties such a stationery boxes / files, dental consumables or other deliveries.
  • Patients or their carers and companions may, on occasion challenge staff with inappropriate behaviour. This may be aggressive and abusive. This will place emotional demands on the post holder who should be aware that this might be part of working life. Smile Together will support the post holder in such circumstances.
  • There will be occasions when travel to work in other locations will be required.
  • Actively engage with Smile Together teams and participate in audit activities, development and in-house meetings etc
  • Be responsible for safe working and practice on a day-to-day basis in sites of clinical activity, ensuring compliance with clinical governance and legislation, appropriate health, safety and security procedures within the work area, and report accidents, incidents and near misses using the Smile Together incident reporting procedure
  • Undertake other reasonable duties as requested by the Clinical Director and Smile Together Management Team

Key accountabilities:

  • Working with the clinic nurse on a day-to-day basis.

This post requires Occupational Health clearances, DBS clearance and two satisfactory references prior to start date, with all interview and appointment expenses covered including travel and DBS check.

Knowledge, Education, Training and Skills:

  • Have good general dental experience.
  • Have experience in all aspects of orthodontics.
  • Have a higher dental qualification appropriate to the specialist role, if appropriate.
  • Have leadership and administrative competencies.
  • Have full registration, and specialist registration with the G.D.C.
  • Have the ability and knowledge to assess patients’ needs and to make appropriate treatment decisions (treatment plan).
  • Have the ability to plan orthodontic services in liaison with colleagues.

Working conditions:

  • It is expected that the post holder will be familiar with NHS dental services regulations and will be willing to receive appropriate on-going training and professional/personal development
  • The work is primarily clinic based and will include use of computer and telephony equipment
  • The work may include occasional light lifting duties such as stationery boxes, files, dental consumables or other deliveries.
  • There will be occasions when travel to work in other locations will be required, with paid business mileage
