An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Dental Hygienist / Therapist at Smile Together Dental CIC, working within our Brighter Dental team to support our continuing business growth and development.

Reporting to the Brighter Dental Area Manager, this position will suit someone who is an experienced Hygienist / Therapist looking for a change and who would be interested in relocating to and working in our Penzance practice. Responsibilities will include working as part of the practice team to ensure our patients are well looked after and we deliver to the highest levels of patient care.

Job Title: Hygienist / Therapist

Salary: Competitive – £35 per hour

Hours: Part Time – up to two days per week (14 hours)

Role Summary:

Whether you’re a recently qualified dental therapist looking for that early career opportunity with mentoring, training and development, are returning from a career break or simply seeking to refocus your dental career in a salaried role to aid in the overall delivery of our dental and hygiene services, we have an exciting part-time opportunity in our Penzance practice. We’re a committed and friendly team that puts our people and patients first.

The post holder will:

  • Provide clinical dental treatment within our practice on prescription from the dentists, for children and adults
  • Deliver dental therapy / hygiene services to our patients both on referral from the dentist and also on a direct access basis.
  • Actively engage with Smile Together teams and participate in audit activities, planning and development sessions, and in-house meetings etc
  • Be responsible for safe working and practice on a day-to-day basis in sites of clinical activity, ensuring compliance with clinical governance and legislation, appropriate health, safety and security procedures within the work area, and report accidents, incidents and near misses using the Smile Together incident reporting procedure

  • Undertake other reasonable duties as requested by the Area Manager and Smile Together Management Team

This post requires Occupational Health clearances, DBS clearance and two satisfactory references prior to start date, with all interview and appointment expenses covered including travel and DBS check.

Working conditions:

  • It is expected that the post holder will be familiar with NHS dental services regulations and will be willing to receive appropriate ongoing training and professional/personal development
  • The work is primarily practice based and will include use of computer and telephony equipment
  • The work may include occasional light lifting duties such as stationery boxes, files, dental consumables or other deliveries
  • There will be occasions when travel to work in other locations will be required, with paid business mileage

Clinical knowledge, training and experience

BSc in Dental Therapy


Diploma of Dental Therapy plus Certificate of Extended Duties in Dental Therapy


A minimum of 3 years dental experience


Full registration with the General Dental Council


Competency in the common aspects of clinical dentistry and experience of a wide range of dental procedures acquired through training and clinical experience, including for example:

       · Fillings in deciduous and permanent teeth which entails cavity preparation using high speed cutting equipment and a variety of materials

       · Giving local anaesthesia by infiltration and/or block injection

       · Pulp treatment of primary teeth

       · Extraction of primary teeth under local anaesthesia

       · Taking and developing intra and extra oral radiographs

       · The application of fissure sealants and topical fluoride treatments

       · Scaling, polishing and root surface debridement

       · Taking impressions

       · Re-cementing of crowns to permanent teeth

       · Deciduous tooth preparation and fitting of preformed metal crowns

       · Individual oral hygiene, diet instruction and advice


Demonstrable understanding of all aspects of pain and anxiety management, particularly for anxious patients


Ability to deal with the public in a courteous and professional manner, and be competent and confident in dealing with patients


Evidence of/commitment to continuing professional and personal development


Experience in treating a range of oral conditions in various primary healthcare dental settings


Familiarity with NHS dental services regulations and knowledge / acceptance of NHS / local policies and guidelines


Trained to recognise and respond to medical emergencies (ie. Immediate Life Support Techniques)


Knowledge of systems of care provision and current health and safety regulations including adherence to COSHH guidelines and ionizing radiation regulations


Awareness of and ability to keep patient confidentiality


Knowledge of the Data Protection Act/General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) and NHS Confidentiality Guidelines (eg. Caldicott) and their implications


General skills and experience

A current full driving licence
