As part of the Smile Together Dental group, Brighter Dental is an exciting and growing multi-practice Dental Company operating across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Currently with five practices offering a range of NHS and private Dental and cosmetic treatments, the company is young, vibrant and patient focussed.

The role will be part clinical and part managerial and the right applicant will be invited to join the Board of Directors to help shape strategy alongside clinical delivery included CQC accountability.

Providing support to the clinicians and practice teams, the Clinical Lead will also be the link into West Country Dental Care, Smile Together’s leading specialist NHS service which also operates across Cornwall and is sometimes collocated with Brighter Dental practices.

Job Title: Dental Clinical Lead and Board Director – Brighter Dental

Salary: Competitive – circa £100k dependent upon employment status (to be agreed with successful candidate)

Hours: 37.5hrs (full time) – based on three days working in surgery and two days visiting other clinics completing agreed management and administrative duties

Responsible and accountable to:  Managing Director

Location:  Based at one of our Brighter Dental practices across Cornwall, with regular travel across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly to our other Brighter Dental practices

Line management responsibilities:

This clinical leadership role has direct line management responsibility on a clinical level for the team of Dentists, Therapists, Hygienists and Dental Nurses who operate within Brighter Dental.

Role summary:

We are seeking an experienced Clinical Lead to direct our Brighter Dental clinical services. At all times demonstrating our core values, the post holder will provide professional leadership for clinical staff and will continue to deliver regular, high level clinical work, building on an outstanding track record in dentistry.

The role is also a Board Director for Brighter Dental, contributing towards the leadership of the Smile Together group of companies. The post holder will promote good practice and cooperation between all parts of the Smile Together group and ensure we maintain the highest clinical standards and quality of dental care.

An effective communicator both inside and outside the business, the Clinical Lead will have an active ambassadorial role in promoting Brighter Dental services and Smile Together externally and taking the company forward to become a long term sustainable organisation. The Clinical Lead will maintain and expand the organisation’s knowledge and understanding on clinical and technological developments, dental technique and practice and have a high level of involvement and be clinically responsible for recruitment, retention and training pathways of all Brighter Dental clinicians.

The post holder will:

  • Maintain their own clinical skills, including regular practice sessions (NHS and/or private care). This may also include supporting practices with clinical delivery e.g. to meet annual target or to cover absences;
  • Lead the recruitment and retention of dentists, therapists & hygienists and undertake regular peer reviews and 1-2-1 conversations;
  • Take full responsibility for the clinical governance arrangements and ensure all policies, protocols and guidelines are being implemented and followed, supporting the development of new policies as required by the organisation for improving the quality of care in our dental practices;
  • The post-holder will represent Brighter Dental on internal groups and committees (such as the Group-wide Clinical Quality Committee) and external groups as necessary;
  • Support practices and staff in managing complaints and incidents and encourage an open learning environment that promotes good quality patient care;
  • Complete risk assessments and action plans when a risk is identified;
  • Provide clinical support, advice on training and development and operational support as required.
  • Actively engage with Smile Together teams and participate in audit activities, development and in-house meetings etc
  • Be responsible for safe working and practice on a day-to-day basis in sites of clinical activity, ensuring compliance with clinical governance and legislation, appropriate health, safety and security procedures within the work area, and report accidents, incidents and near misses using the Smile Together incident reporting procedure

Key accountabilities:

  • Lead Brighter Dental clinical teams, providing advice, support and leadership in formal and informal ways;
  • Leading on compliance and governance frameworks;
  • Accountability for CQC;
  • Arrange and undertake regular clinic visits, audits and clinical supervision observation sessions with our clinical teams;
  • Maintaining and developing your clinical competency and continuing professional/personal development according to agreed training needs via our Smile Together Training Academy;
  • Working alongside clinical and professional support colleagues in facilitating on-going organisational change and development;
  • Working in our Brighter Dental clinics.

This post requires Occupational Health clearances, DBS clearance and two satisfactory references prior to start date, with all interview and appointment expenses covered including travel and DBS check.

Working conditions:

  • It is expected that the post holder will be familiar with NHS dental services regulations and will be willing to receive appropriate on-going training and professional/personal development;
  • The work is both clinic and office based and will include use of computer and telephony equipment;
  • The work may include occasional light lifting duties such as stationery boxes, files, dental consumables or other deliveries;
  • There will be occasions when travel to work in other locations will be required, with paid business mileage.

Person Specification:

Clinical knowledge, training and experience

Have a degree in Dentistry


Post graduate dental or management qualifications


Full registration with the General Dental Council and Professional Indemnity Insurance


Have or be eligible for a current NHS Performer Number


Competency in the common aspects of clinical dentistry and experience of a wide range of dental procedures acquired through training and clinical experience


Experience in all aspects of surgical and general dentistry


A working knowledge of clinical audits


Demonstrable understanding of all aspects of pain and anxiety management, particularly for anxious patients


Ability to deal with the public in a courteous and professional manner, and be competent and confident in dealing with patients who need special care dentistry


Ability and knowledge to assess patients’ needs and make the appropriate treatment planning decisions


Ability to see the wider picture and use diplomacy skills to obtain a satisfactory result for all parties


Evidence of/commitment to continuing professional and personal development


Experience if monitoring and evaluation of clinical services


Considerable knowledge and experience of clinical governance
